| Online supervision works in much the
same way as face to face supervision, i.e. you present your client
and your supervisor responds. Obviously there are differences too,
as there are with online counselling, like the absence of facial
expression or tone of voice, but a supervisor who is trained to
work online can compensate for these by picking up on other 'clues'.
Online supervision can be carried out by email exchange, by live
sessions with an introductory email, or a combination of the two.
If you are new to online supervision I would suggest that you try
both and see which your prefer.
If you yourself work online it is a good idea to have a supervisor
who is experienced in online work as they will then understand the
particular phenomena that may occur online and will be able to help
to you recognise and deal with these.
However online supervision works equally well for counsellors who
practise face to face. (I am also an experienced face to face counsellor.)
Your supervision takes place at your own computer so it could be
especially useful if you would otherwise have to travel some distance
for your supervision.
I am happy to supervise integrative, psychodynamic or person-centred
counsellors. For those interested in such things, I use the Hawkins
and Shohet model of supervision because I like its flexibility,
but am also familiar with the Page and Wosket model.
